Comets get GW at home for regional opener

Comets come up short in latest district match / September 02, 2019
Halifax County High School did not win its latest round in Piedmont District golf action, but the Comets still have a commanding lead.

Magna Vista prevailed at Tuscarora golf course in Thursday district regular season action, defeating the Comets 354-358. Patrick County placed third with 363 and Tunstall was fourth with 380.

Will Gardner of Magna Vista emerged as the medalist with a round of 81.

For the Comets, Willoughby Gasperini had an 86, and Joseph Wilson carded a round of 89. Will Abdi had a 91 and Harrison Culpepper had the last counted score of 92.

Minijune Kim fired a round of 95 and Ryan Corona had a 103.

Coach David Day said the Comets had to deal with a very tough course.

“Tuscarora Golf Club was in great shape. The greens were extremely fast and undulating.

“Our team was not at its best. But played hard and came up a little short,” said Day.

“Joseph Wilson turned in a pretty good round of 89 considering the slope and speed of the greens,” said Day.

“There were no scores in the 70s and only seven scores in the 80s,” said Day.
