Comets competitive in regional wrestling action

SoVaNow.com / February 12, 2018
Halifax County High School wrestling coach David Riddle did not get any grapplers into the state tournament, but the Comets posted very competitive efforts in region D wrestling action.

Halifax finished with three fifth place finishers, including Shon Ballou, Tyler Hudson and Tyler Mabe.

“Hudson and Mabe both put themselves in the semis after day one, and Ballou clawed his way back into contention by winning two Friday night after losing his first. We felt like we were in pretty good shape to make a run at states. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to pull through in our consolation semis matches. All three were close, highly contested matches. We just came up on the wrong end,” said Riddle.

“First of all my hats off to this group of wrestlers. They gave it their all in every match, win or lose. To have three still fighting for podium finishes after day two and considering that we only brought five shows the fight that this group had,” said Riddle.

“One of the most telling things about this group was what happened in the fifth place matches. Often, when wrestlers know that the shot at states is lost at this point, they fold in that next match. That didn’t happen in any of them. Coach (Jay) Cole and myself were extremely proud of that,” said Riddle.

“Weather, illness, and injury had a huge impact on our year. But the group that we put on the bus was competitive each time we stepped on the mat. They fought hard all year long. We are extremely proud of what they were able to accomplish,” said Riddle.
