Comets drop volleyball match at Magna Vista 3-1 / September 30, 2021

Halifax County High School varsity volleyball fell to Magna Vista 3-1 Tuesday.

Playing on the road, the Comets came out strong winning a close set one 25-23. The Comets would drop the next three sets 25-12, 25-29, and 25-14.

The loss ended a two-game win streak and has the team at 4-7. Coach Sunshine Martin said her girls played well but were just out of sync on this night.

“We played tough out the gate,” Martin said. “[We] really fought hard to win that first set.

“Set three was a much better set than the second. Our setters had a hard time getting off good sets in set two.

“We need to put all our pieces together. When our defense is on our offense is off and vice versa. We need to be clicking on all cylinders.”

The match did offer the team an opportunity to test out a new defense. She noted with a lineup change the players adjusted well.

Trinity Martin had a solid match with two aces, two blocks, five kills, and two digs. Tessy Henderson provided nice defense at the net with four blocks; Sarah Watts had a block. Kylie Satterfield with 10 digs and Kate Jackson adding five assists delivered some good scoring opportunities.

“We had to change our lineup for this match so we were learning on the fly,” Martin continued. “I was proud of our middles. They got good hands on the ball and we also tried a new defense that was very effective against the tip game.”

The Comets are o the road Oct. 5 at Martinsville. Jayvees begin at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity following at 7 p.m.
