Comets fall in state semi-finals / June 14, 2019
Halifax County High School varsity baseball fell short Thursday in the Class 5 state semifinals, losing to Mills Godwin, 5-4.

Godwin, now 23-2, got a critical walk-off two-run double off from Bryce Safferwich in the Eagles’ last-at bat in the bottom of the seventh.

Godwin faces Stafford Friday in the state championship game.

Halifax's season is over.

Halifax had 12 runners left on base, including bases-loaded situations three times. Godwin stranded five runners.

Halifax had nine hits, including two-hit efforts from Drew Harlow, Alex Lowery and Joey Duffer. Dylan Clark had the go-ahead RBI in the Comet half of the fourth. Halifax also got RBI from Lowery and Harlow.

Harlow went 5.2 innings, throwing 111 pitches, and left with a no-decision. He struggled a bit in the bottom of the first, when Godwin rallied from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game.

Halifax then added a run in its half of the fourth, and the game remained scoreless until Godwin rallied with two in the final at-bat in regulation.

Godwin had nine hits. Halifax had two errors. Godwin had one.

Harlow allowed six hits, three earned runs, and struck out seven. He walked four.

Lowery came on in relief and got out of trouble in the Godwin sixth. Halifax came unglued in the Godwin seventh, as Lowery allowed three hits and two earned runs.
