The Halifax County High School varsity volleyball team played a close match with Magna Vista on Tuesday night but still came up short, losing 2-0 and 2-1 in the doubleheader.

The Comets play their final match of the regular season tonight at home against Patrick County.

Coach Sunshine Martin said an injury suffered by one of the Comets before the match began stunned the team and they never really recovered.

Martin also said they had problems at the net with Magna Vista recording too many points off of tips. She said the girls did finally settle in but were unable to get the win.

“We had everything set to go for this match and had an injury right before we started so we had to make immediate adjustments,” Martin said. “This threw the girls for a loop. The girls should have won both matches.

“We just had a breakdown on communication and didn’t cover the tip well. They ate us up on tips. Once we adjusted we were able to come out on top for set two of match two. We competed in each match.

“We led a lot. We just have to learn how to finish.”

Score in the first match were 25-23 and 15-11.

Stats in the match were scarce with Trinity Martin leading the Comets. Martin had three digs, two kills and a block in the match.

Baily Bowen had an ace; Amanda Duffer one kill and a block; Sarah Watts one assists; Madison Barnes with two assists; Emma Payne had seven digs; Shayma Hankins and Kate Jackson had an ace and two assists, in that order.
