Comets finish in solid second place in cross country meet

SoVaNow.com / October 03, 2019
Halifax County High School boys’ and girls’ cross country had solid second place finishes to Tunstall Tuesday at the tough GW course.

“It was a really good day for our team. seven guys in the top 15. Six girls there. And both teams coming close to being on top. We were missing a few due to injury and school events, so to have those step up and move up in the ladder today was tremendous,” said coach David Riddle.

“We struggled big time at GW last year. This is a really tough course and it got the best of us then. But they really stepped up today and ran a determined meet. Many of the veterans knocked as much as two-five minutes off their times from last year here.

“This is the type of meet that Coach Saunders and I want to see heading into October. Today was a huge confidence builder. We will look to build on this as we go forward,” said Riddle.

Halifax County had three girls finish in the top five, second place Mallory Salley (18:35.45.4); third place Lydia Wenzel (18.35.53.6) and fifth place Abby Casen (18.36.42.5).

The top Comet boys’ finishers included Andrew Salley, 17.53.38.8 and Will van Opstal, 17.57.29.8.
