Comets finish second in WVD match

SoVaNow.com / September 02, 2009
Halifax County’s golf team posted three scores in the 70s Monday to finish in second place in the third Western Valley District regular-season match of the season at Danville Golf Club.

The Comets finished 10 strokes in arrears to winner Franklin County, but bested Patrick Henry by three strokes to cut into the Patriots’ hold on second place in the league standings with two matches left.

Franklin County, which has won all three district events this season, won the match with a 311, followed by Halifax (321), PH (324) and host GW Danville (362).

William Fleming did not field a complete, four-player team (only three players competed for the Colonels Monday) and failed to post a team score. By league rule, the Colonels have been disqualified from district championship consideration.

William Fleming had posted team scores in each of the league’s first two matches - at Willow Creek Country Club and at Countryside Golf Club. Franklin County, which seeks its sixth WVD championship in nine years,, leads PH by 65 shots, 904-969.

Halifax (975) trails the Patriots by six strokes and GW Danville (1,073) is fourth.

Halifax posted three scores in the 70s - a 76 by Coy Lawson, a 78 by Cody Spencer and a 79 by T.J. Daniel. The Comets also counted an 88 by Parker Harrell.

Kaitlin Fallen’s 100 did not factor into the Comets’ team score.

PH’s Austin Dillard earned medalist honors for the second time this season by carding a 72.

The next WVD match is scheduled for Sept. 9 at Green’s Folly Golf Club in South Boston.

Tee time is 2 p.m.
