Comets gearing up for basketball season, scrimmages set Nov. 18 / November 11, 2021

The Halifax County High School basketball teams began tryouts Monday with a strong turnout.

Sterling Williams, varsity boys coach and David Graham, who coaches the varsity girls said participation is up from last year’s shortened COVID-19 season. Both plan for jayvee teams this year.

Both teams open with scrimmages. Boys will be on the road to Dan River on Nov. 18, while the girls will host the Dan River squad. The final scrimmage will be Nov. 23, with the boys hosting Cosby High School. The girls will be on the road at LCA.

Regular season play for the girls begins Nov. 29 with a road trip to E.C. Glass.

Both teams play Franklin County Dec. 1 with the boys away and the girls at home. On Dec. 3 the varsity girls take on Person while the varsity and jayvee boys teams play the Rockets in South Boston.

Dec. 7 the girls travel to Prince Edward High School; the Comet boys will host PE on the same night.

Both teams will have their first Piedmont District match of the season on Dec. 10 against Tunstall with the boys at home and the girls on the road. The final games before Christmas Break will be with Person on Dec. 17 with the boys hosting.

One event that will not be happening this year according HCHS athletics director Allen Lawter is the annual Holiday Hoops tournament that would usually take place directly following Christmas. Instead the boys and girls will play Person on Dec. 28 and Bluestone on Dec. 29.

After the New Year both squads will get into the meat of the Piedmont District schedules. The first matchup in 2022 for each will be Martinsville on Jan. 4 – the boys. The final regular season game for both teams is Feb. 8 versus Magna Vista.

District tournament quarterfinals are set to begin Feb. 11 with region competition following.

The preseason conditioning program has attracted nearly 30, said Williams. Tryouts this week have been as high as 35.

Lawter said all home basketball games will be live streamed on for the convenience of Comet sports fans.

Jayvee games start at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Visit to see the latest updates on Halifax Comet sports.
