Comets open district play

Comets golfers fourth in district match / September 06, 2018
Halifax County High School golf finished fourth in a district regular season match Tuesday, as Comet coach David Graham took a different approach.

The Comets had a team score of 347. Patrick County won the match with a 315, while Franklin County carded a 320. Tunstall was third at 338, with the Comets fourth at 347. Bassett came home last with a 360.

Will Abdi led the team with an 83. Harrison Culpepper had an 87. Jacob Day delivered an 88, and Jillian Waller had an 89 for the counted scores.

Graham said he took some different players this week, as the coaching staff is searching for its fifth and sixth place scorers.

He also gave some of the starters a week’s break to catch up on some academic work.

“We were led by Wil Abdi with a 83. He got off to a rough start but finished strong on the back nine. That was basically our team day, we started poorly and then played some good golf.

“If we can get off to a better start we will be all right, just got to get the nerves out,” said Graham.

Halifax has two matches next week before the district tournament.
