Comets post pair of fourths in cross country meet / October 10, 2019
Halifax County High School boys and girls’ cross country posted a pair of fourth place efforts in a Piedmont District regular season match.

Franklin County joined their former Piedmont District schools, and the Eagles won both sides of the meet. Tunstall played host for this round of the cross country action.

The Comet girls were fourth with 84 points. The Blue Comet boys had 88 points.

“We were pleased with the top 15 finishes for Drew, Mallory, and Lydia today. And we had a few others that were in the ballpark. And times were down from last week, which is always a positive,” said Comet coach David Riddle.

“Still, we are looking for a little more speed and push. Coach Saunders and I tell this group time and time again that we know what they are capable of and just want to see it out on the course. We are beginning to narrow the gaps between our top runners some, so hopefully that will continue. We just want to see that competitive drive and spirit that we know we have as we push closer to the postseason.

“We will be at Smith River for the next two regular season meets, and then the Piedmont District Championship the following as well. The next two should give us a good feel for the course and have us completely prepared for the championship,” said Riddle.

Three Comets placed in the top 15 in boys and girls’ action. On the boys’ side, Andrew Salley ran sixth fastest, with a time of 18.53.07. Mallory Salley ran 12th quick in the top 15, with a time of 24.48.99. Lyndia Wenzel was 15th, completing the course in 25.52.27.
