Comets prepare for Senior Night

South Boston News / November 02, 2017
The Halifax County High School varsity football team has slipped in the latest VHSL playoff rankings, with one game remaining.

A very potent GW-Danville team is headed to Halifax for the regular season finale. It’s Senior night for the Comets, now 5-4.

Halifax is now 10th in the latest Region 5D rankings, with only eight teams out of 12 in the region postseason bound.

Halifax has a ranking of 23.666. Brooke Point and Stafford occupy the first two positions in the rankings.

Massaponax has the final transfer spot with a rating of 22.555.

Halifax has to deal with a talented GW offense. GW, now 8-1, is averaging a school-record 57.7 ppg, the highest scoring output in the VHSL this season, regardless of classification.

The Eagles are coming off a 70-7 demolition of Bassett.

Halifax will try to answer that Eagle onslaught with a team that has a few key injury issues.

Coach Grayson Throckmorton said GW has a very good football team, with considerable speed on both sides of the ball.

GW is well-versed in what it does, according to Throckmorton. And speed is a serious problem for any defense.

And the Comets are short in the personnel department.

Feature running back Jamal Brandon (shoulder) is questionable. The offensive line is dealing with some injury issues as well.

Throckmorton said Halifax has to play mistake free football, with a complete 100 percent focus on football to even have a chance at the upset.
