Comets reset, hope to begin season Monday / January 07, 2021

After a pause before it ever started, Halifax County High School will try again Monday to begin its winter sports season.

All games this week were postponed, beginning with Monday’s planned basketball openers for both the boys and girls varsity against Patrick County.

Also postponed were openers for wrestling and the swim teams.

Though there were varying specific reasons as to why opponents couldn’t fulfill the schedule, it all came down to COVID-19 related issues in varying degrees that rendered postponement decisions in one form or another. Most schools in the Piedmont District will be ready to play next week.

Halifax County High School varsity basketball teams are once again scheduled to tip off the winter sports season on Monday. Though there really won’t be a tip-off to start the basketball game due to COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Varsity basketball will meet GW-Danville with the girls squad at home and the boys on the road. Both games start at 7 p.m.

For now HCHS won’t be allowing any fans to attend athletics events in person. The athletics department hopes to eventually offer some type of streaming services to the Comets sports community.

At this time, the boys swim team is set to host Magna Vista Tuesday at 5 p.m. The wrestling team is set to host Patrick County and Tunstall at 6 p.m.

Wednesday is has boys basketball hosting Bassett and the girls on the road at Bassett.

On Thursday the wrestling team travels to George Washington – Danville, in a tri-match with GW and Tunstall.

To close out opening week basketball will take on its third opponent on the frame with the varsity Comet boys at home facing Magna Vista, girls travel.

On Friday the boys swim will take on GW and Martinsville at Hargrave Military Academy.
