Comets second in cross country / October 01, 2012
The Halifax County High School boys and girls cross country teams both finished second in Wednesday’s six-team race at Dan Daniel Park in Danville.

The race was hosted by GW Danville and attended by Bassett, Tunstal, Magna Vista, Martinsville, and HCHS. Bassett won the girls race, while Martinsville led the team scoring in the boys race.

Emma Worsley was the top Comet runner for the girls finishing in sixth place overall, followed by Mary Popek (10th) and Lucy Morrison (13th) in the top 15 runners. Ethan Collie finished third overall to lead the Comet boys team with Vatsal Lal (10th) and Gabe Pool (13th) inside the top 15.

“We ran pretty well overall. I’m glad we got the chance to go back to Dan Daniel, it gives us a chance to show the kids how much they’ve improved over the first race of the season. It was good to see some of the teams we’ll be running against next year, even though they won’t have the same runners it will help us realize we’ll still have to continue working hard against the new district,” coach Brady Taylor said.

“We have a couple of our girls dealing with some minor injuries that slowed them down a bit, but overall they are starting to do what we know they can do. Our top seven is changing every time out because they are really pushing each other. If they can keep it up, we should have a strong finish to the season. Baylee Snead has worked her way up to the fourth spot on the team from ninth a couple of weeks ago and has really been impressive lately,” Taylor said.

“The boys race saw some changes in our top seven as well. Gabe Pool has been improving every day and has been pushing our top guys. He really manned up today, realizing that a couple of other guys weren’t having their best races and he needed to pick up some slack to help us out,” Taylor said.
