Comets second in cross country meet

SoVaNow.com / October 14, 2021

The Halifax County High School cross country teams competed at Martinsville on Tuesday with both the girls and boys placing second.

The girls missed tying for first by one point, losing to Tunstall 38-39. The team placed four runners in the top 10 — Lydia Wenzel, Morgan Crenshaw, and Mallory Salley. Kate Bishop paced her team with a third place finish running a time of 24:19.

Coach David Riddle said the girls loss was tough as the Comet girls have been nipping at Tunstall’s heels the entire season with some wins.

“The one point loss to Tunstall was a tough one,” Riddle said. “We have been close with them all year, either beating them by a couple or losing by a few.

“You try not to overthink what could have gone the other way. We will simply use this as motivation for the next meet.”

The boys team saw their performance dip some at the meet. The Comets scored 61 points.

Tunstall dominated first place with a 31. GW was third at 92.

“On the guys side we fell off a little after having a couple of close races with Tunstall in recent meets,” said Riddle. “Again this will be used as motivation for our next round.”

Ethan Kirkhart with a time of 19:42 and Will van Opstal’s 20:18 led the boys with fourth and 10th place finishes, respectively.

On the jayvee team Brennan Hunt’s 22:30 was the best time scored. Teammates Joel Layne (26:24) and Cole Johnson (28:07) also competed.

Riddle and girls coach Michelle Palmore said the teams will need to stay focused as regular season ends and postseason play awaits.

“We have a solid group with a great deal of potential,” Riddle said. “We just need to harness all of that and come together as a team for our final regular season meet next week and the postseason that follows.”

The Comets finish the regular season Oct. 19 at the Smith River Complex-Martinsville. The meet starts at 5 p.m.
