Comets sixth in Rocket Invitational

SoVaNow.com / January 06, 2020
Host Person County won the Rocket Invitational wrestling tournament with 143.5 points, with Chapel Hill second. Halifax County placed sixth in the event with 41 points.

Halifax coach David Riddle stressed the positive results.

“Last year we had a really rough go at it for the Roxboro tourney, as sometimes happens the first time on the mat after Christmas break. We were worried that some of the December injuries would also be lingering as well. But as a whole we had a much better tournament than we had last year,” said Riddle.

“To only have five wrestlers in today, to medal three, and have one other with a .500 record, and come out with a sixth place team finish was pretty impressive.

“Vicks was wrestling up at 113 today and came back with a win in his last match to come in third after a slow start to the day. Driggs had an excellent first match and wrestled hard in his championship match but just came up short to finish third. And Zyon was very impressive picking up two wins in his first dual tourney and actually tying for first with two other wrestlers but getting third when total points scored for team were calculated,” Riddle said.

“Saunders had a decent day as well to get to the third place match and end up fourth, and while J.T. did not win today he is continuing to improve each and every time he steps on the mat.

“This group has a lot of heart and keeps on fighting each time out. We will look to use the rest of January to continue to improve and gear up for the postseason,” said Riddle.
