Comets softball clinches state tourney berth / May 29, 2019
HCHS varsity softball took advantage of clutch pitching in the circle from Lauryn Chappell and Madison Barnes on the way to a 6-3 win over North Stafford Tuesday night in regional semifinals action here.

The Comets return home tonight for the regional finals. The win Tuesday propelled HCHS into next week’s Class 5 round of eight in state tournament action.

Chappell worked four innings and Barnes finished, and HCHS got a few breaks along the way.

Trailing 1-0 after a Comet throwing error, HCHS battled back to tie the contest in the bottom of the first inning. Karina Velazquez was hit by a pitch and a run scored in a bases-loaded situation.

HCHS picked up two runs in its half of the second.

Katie Cole sliced a hit into short left field and the Comets moved ahead, 2-1. Barnes then dropped a hard to locate infield dribbler and HCHS picked up another run.

A wild pitch got the fourth Comet run home in the bottom of the second.

North Stafford cut the lead to 4-2 in its half of the third.

Trinity Martin drove home Chappell in the bottom of the fourth. Chappell broke on the hit immediately and scampered home in an example of excellent base running.

That extended the Comet lead to 5-2.

Barnes surrendered an RBI double in the North Stafford fifth.

Martin delivered an RBI groundout in the Comet sixth to finish the scoring on the night.

Then, in the seventh, Barnes clamped down and the Comets celebrated.

Halifax had several excellent defensive moments. The hurlers got some key momentum-sapping strikeouts.
