Comets split in dual wrestling meet

South Boston News
SoVaNow.com / December 10, 2018
Halifax County High School wrestling split two dual matches Wednesday in regular season Piedmont district action at the Comet gym.

Halifax defeated Martinsville, 36-18. The Comets fell to Tunstall, 54-24. Here are summaries by weight class:

Coach David Riddle saw some positives.

“We were pleased to come out of tonight with a win in one of the matches. We certainly would have liked to have picked up two, but we have stressed getting more wins in dual meets this season and the overall team aspect so starting the season 1-1 has us going in the right direction.

“And even in the loss against a Tunstall team that is solid year in and year out we feel like we wrestled tough. We lost five of the nine contested matches against them, and were close on several of the losses,” said Riddle.

“Saunders, Hudson, and Mabe got pins in both of their matches, and Bryan got a pin as well. The rest of the team fought hard as well. This group is showing a lot of grit and determination each time out. We still have some early season kinks to work out but overall we feel like things are progressing nicely. The ones that are getting early season wins are gaining confidence. And even in our losses they are seeing what is going wrong. We will look to keep building on that,” said Riddle.
