SoVaNow.com / April 15, 2013Halifax County High School varsity baseball is now 2-0 in the Western Valley district after outlasting PH-Roanoke, 12-8, at home Friday night.
The Comets, who drilled Fleming earlier in the week, had a more challenging assignment against PH. The Patriots used the long ball and tried to rally with a four-run sixth. But Halifax put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run rally.
The Comets mustered too much offensive prowess for PH.
Patrick Barton drilled a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth and pitched the final two innings and did not give up any runs.
Halifax finished with ten hits, most for extra bases.
Leadoff hitter Ryan Yates doubled twice, and scored twice, once on a passed ball. Yates also cracked an RBI two-bagger in the second inning. Harris cracked a two-run triple in the second inning.
DH Thomas Cole doubled twice and singled, while scoring three runs in support of hurler Seth Elliott. Cole also had an RBI double in the third.
Andrew Hamlett had an RBI sacrifice fly in the third.
Tyler Stephens cracked a one-out solo homer n the fifth.
The key inning for HCHS came in the sixth.
Halifax scored four in the inning. PH had tied it at 8-all in the top of the sixth.
Yates doubled off the wall, and Nick Anderson sacrificed Yates to third. Yates scored on a wild pitch, and Will Harris reached on an error. Tyler Stephens reached on an error.
Then, Rufus Jeffress grounded out, getting Stephens out at second. Stephens made a good play to avoid the double play. Barton followed his game-changing blow.
Elliott started, and Barton finished the last two innings.
HCHS is 6-4, with a pivotal week ahead. Franklin County meets the Comets at home Tuesday night and GW visits on Friday.
In the first inning, PH jumped to a 3-0 lead, but the Comets had two good plays to avoid further trouble. Catcher Tristan Howerton threw out a PH runner at second and Barton, playing third, dove to stop a ground ball and then threw the PH runner out at first.
