Comets swimmers stroking their way to WVD meet

SoVaNow.com / January 28, 2013
The HCHS girls and boys swim team has had a fine season, with an 8-1 mark in quad meets this winter.

The Comet swimmers, who head to the Western Valley District meet in Roanoke Tuesday, have shown consistent improvement in lowering their times.

As for the girls, several performers have had standout seasons in terms of producing the points load for the Comets. These swimmers include Jordan Miller, Jessica Conner, Anna Carole Cole and Lexi Reaves.

The top points producers for the boys include Grey Henderson, Collin Kashmer, Noah Stevens, Joey Gasperini and Keith Crews.

The Comet goal for the WVD meet is to get a strong group qualified for the Northwest regionals. Coach Shawn Torian hopes to get at least 15 Comets qualified for the regional meet.

Torian said the Comet senior class has provided outstanding leadership, sparking the team to an exciting and fun season. But the Comets will face tough competition at the WVD meet, from PH-Roanoke and Franklin County.

HCHS hopes to get some swimmers place first or second in WVD tournament meet events. Torain said the girls’ 200 medley and 200 free relays have a shot at a finish in the top two, as do the Comet boys’ teams in those events. Torain also believes Sergio Carbello and Joey Gasperini have a shot for the top two in the 50 free.
