Cross country splits against Martinsville / September 02, 2009
The HCHS cross country teams competed against Martinsville High School Monday in their first meet of the season. The girls’ team came away with the win, but the boys lost 15-50.

Emily Conner won the girls race, and Zack Evans finished sixth in the boys race to lead the team.

Both the boys and the girls ran well.

“Martinsville is a strong team that has been together for a while. We are actually ahead of where we started last season. Zack and Emily both ran well as expected, but we were pleasantly surprised by Larry Taylor finishing third for the boys team, and Caitlin Helinski coming in at number five for the girls,” said coach Brady Taylor.

“It was a good effort for the first race of the year.

“It was the first race for a lot of our runners and it proved to be a learning experience.

(Monday) provided us with a good starting point, now we know what we have to focus on as a team to be where we want to be in October,” said Taylor.

Girls: Emily Conner, first, 25:33; Ashley Burton, third, 27:51; Ashley Bowen, fourth, 28:23; Cianne Townsend, fifth, 29:19. Caitlin Helinski, seventh, 30:40. Boys: Zack Evans, sixth, 21:06; Evan Morrison, seventh, 21:10; Larry Taylor, 11th, 22:27; Corey Rosche, 13th, 23:21; Aaron Little, 14th, 24:23 and Gannon Griffin, 15th, 25:18.
