Dixie Boys 1-1 in state tournament play
SoVaNow.com / July 21, 2014The Halifax County Dixie Boys 14s year old all stars fell to Galax 8-6 second round action at the state tournament.
HC’s are now 1-1 in the tournament.
Galax scored a run in the first inning, three in the third, and another in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning.
HC rallied in the fifth inning to tie the score at four-all. Scott Nester led off the inning with a single. Hunter Watts walked and Clay Lloyd was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brayden Moore drew a walk to force in the first run of the game for Halifax. Jake McLamb hit a bases clearing double to tie the score at four all.
Hunter Watts singled with two outs in the top of the sixth inning and Tata Logan came in to run for him. Logan stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Logan then stole home to give Halifax a 5-4 lead.
Galax rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. A solo homerun by Will Scheier in the seventh left HC short of a victory.
Scheier and McLamb led Halifax with 2 hits each and Nester and Hunter Watts both added one hit for HC.
Earlier, Halifax rolled to a 12-0 win over Grayson County in its opening game.
Halifax scored three runs in its half of the first inning.
Lloyd and Moore singled and scored on McLamb’s single.
Scheier was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI ground out by Evan Irby.
Halifax added five runs in its second inning.
Scott Nester tripled and scored on Dawson Watts’ single. Lloyd followed with a single before Watts scored on Moore’s single.
Lloyd scored on a ground out by McLamb. Moore scored on a single by Parker Franklin. McLamb scored on an RBI ground out by Evan Irby.
Halifax kept the momentum rolling, scoring three more runs in the third. Watts’ single was followed by walks to Lloyd and Scheier. Watts and Lloyd scored on McLamb’s single . Scheier scored on Franklin’s single. Halifax added another run in the fourth.
Tata Logan singled and scored on Lloyd’s single to end the game.
Watts and Lloyd led the local all-stars with three hits each. Moore, McLamb, and Franklin added two hits each and Nester and Logan both had a hit.
Watts picked up the win on the mound. Watts went three innings, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out six.
