Dixie Majors lose in state tourney to Mecklenburg / July 15, 2021

The Halifax County Dixie Majors fell behind early Tuesday night against the Mecklenburg County allstars, losing 9-1 in South Hill.

Halifax (2-2) never really got its footing in the game on offense or defense. Halifax scored in the top of the sixth, other than that run, the Mecklenburg boys dominated en route to claiming the Virginia championship. .

Halifax led off at the top of the first and got a solid at-bat from Evan Clark who doubled on a line drive to centerfield. The next three batters would strike out leaving Ryan Duffer, running for Clark stranded.

Mecklenburg posted one run in the bottom of the frame. With two runners on base and one out Parker Farrington rapped a single to centerfield plating Justin Clary who had a leadoff single for the 1-0 lead.

Halifax went down in order in the second inning. Mecklenburg added one run when Clary hit a single up the middle to send Josh Hite home, making it 2-0. Hite was running for the leadoff Drew Fletcher who was hit by a pitch.

Mecklenburg scored twice in the third. With two down Jarrett Hamby came to bat and blasted homerun. The long ball plated Farrington who was on base after hitting into a fielder’s choice.

Neither team posted runs in the fourth but by the bottom of the fifth Mecklenburg was hot again adding four runs. The leadoff batter popped out; this was followed by a Michael Holtzman single and Farrington double.

Hamby hit a two-RBI single to center to bring the score to 6-0. Mecklenburg raised the score to 8-0 when two runners, Hamby and Keyon Green scored on a wild pitch and an error on the catcher, respectively.

Kayden Conner’s single in the sixth with one out would plate Halifax’s only run of the game. His hit sent Christian Midkiff across the plate who had a worked a leadoff walk for the 8-1 score.

After a triple by Holtzman in the bottom of the frame, Farrington grounded out to the short stop plating Holtzman for the 9-1 final.

Fletcher earned the win from the mound going six innings, striking out 13 while allowing two hits and a run.

Hite came in for Fletcher, striking out two batters.

Clark took the loss for Halifax tossing three innings. He struck out three batters, allowed five hits and four runs. Kyle Arendall provided 1.2 innings of relief allowing five hits and four runs.
