The Park View varsity basketball team traveled to Sussex Central High School on Saturday to take part in the third annual Ralph Joyner Classic. The boys varsity lost to the Wildcats of Armstrong High School out of Richmond, 49-39.

The Dragons played four games last week, including the Armstrong matchup. Last Monday, the Dragons traveled to Surry and won 68-50. On Wednesday PV hosted the Halifax Comets and lost 63-29. On Friday the team hit the road to take on Appomattox Regional Governor’s School, winning 58-45 before losing on Saturday.

The only Tri-Rivers District defeat the Dragons have incurred thus far is the 57-51 loss to Greensville in South Hill on Dec. 6. Currently Park View is 4-3, 4-1 with two games on tap for this week.

The Dragons are scheduled to host the Brunswick Bulldogs tonight in a district battle. Much like the Greensville contest, the Brunswick games have become a great rivalry and should provide plenty of entertainment. Brunswick’s record was 5-1 as of Monday morning.

On Friday the Dragons make the trip to cross-county rival Bluestone High School to take on the Barons in a non-district contest. Bluestone was 1-2 in James River District play as the week began.

In the Armstrong loss PV pretty much remained in striking distance throughout the contest. The Wildcats pulled out to a 5-0 lead to start the game.

At the 5:34 mark PV’s Lanthony Joyner went to the stripe and connected of one-of-two. This was quickly followed by a steal by teammate Josh Boyd that had him get the deuce and one. Boyd the hit a trey to raise the score to 7-5, PV.

Armstrong went on a 5-2 run to end the quarter with a 10-9 score. Boyd’s six points paced the Dragons in the first period.

In the second quarter Armstrong went on a 6-1 run for the 16-11 lead. The Wildcats were able to stretch that lead out to 24-17 to go to halftime. Boyd led the way with six points.

The third period saw the continuation of some nice ball by Boyd and Joyner. Armstrong led by six points at 32-26 entering the final period.

The Wildcats were able to get some separation in the fourth period and went on to win 49-39.

Boyd had five treys in the game combined with three deuces and four points at the stripe for 27 points. Joyner added nine points in the losing effort.
