The Park View varsity boys basketball team got off to a great start under first-year head coach Danny Watkins on Monday night, defeating cross-county rival Bluestone 66-46 in South Hill.

The loss drops Bluestone to 0-1 in early season play and takes Park View to 1-0.

Watkins said he was glad to have his first varsity game under his belt and also happy with the way his Dragon players started the season — aggressively.

“We try to come out aggressive and play hard and everything else will take care of itself,” Watkins said. “I like to get up and down and pressure the ball and then take care of the ball when we get the turnovers.”

Park View held the visitors to a 20-point first half, while racking up 23 points in just the first quarter. From that point on, however, the game was fairly balanced, scoring wise.

The Dragons jumped out to an early 13-point lead behind the play of Jatonio Seward who scored eight in the first quarter. Seward finished with 17 points to lead all scorers on the night.

PV teammates Maratavious Holmes and Charlzae Holmes contributed six and five points, respectively, in the opening frame. The Dragons also went four-of-eight at the line and had three treys.

Bluestone posted 10 points in the first quarter. The Barons’ Kwahli Hester hit a three-pointer; George Hurt had a deuce plus one point at the line.

The second quarter was more balanced as the Dragons scored 12 points and Bluestone 10. Nile Atwater and Jaison Dugger each dropped four points in the second for the Dragons.

Bluestone was led by Chris Gregory with four points. Gregory was the only Baron to hit double digits on the night, finishing with 13 points.

Park View led by 15 points as the game went to halftime, 35-20.

The third quarter was critical for Bluestone and they played a decent frame, but PV won the quarter 16-11. The teams battled to a 15-15 final period, but the five-point difference in the third would be all that PV needed to jump out to the 20-point lead and eventual 66-46 win.

“I’m glad to have this first game out of the way. I just hope we learn from a lot of things we’ve got to improve on,” Watkins said.

Still, a win is a win and PV will take it.

Aside from Seward’s 17 points, C. Holmes and Atwater also cracked double figures, scoring 13 and 10 points respectively.

Bluestone was led by Gregory with 13 points. Michael Harris chipped in eight; Patrick Alexander hit six points.

The Dragons return to their home court on Wednesday, hosting 5-A Halifax County. The team completes the week in South Hill on Friday with a game against Brunswick. Both games have start times of 7 p.m.

Bluestone returns to action Dec. 5, at Randolph Henry. Jayvee games begin at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity following.
