Bluestone’s Nyier Evans is the state champion in the 300-meter hurdles after taking first place at the VHSL 2A State Track and Field Championship at East Rockingham High School on Saturday.

Evans’ winning time was 40.18. Evans advanced to the 300-meter hurdle finals on Saturday after qualifying the previous week at the VHSL 2A Region championships.

Evans also participated in the 110-meter hurdles (16:39), and the long jump (19-0) over the course of the two-day event.

Tevarius Brooks had a solid performance. Brooks placed sixth in the high jump with a height of 6-02. The winning jump was 6-05.

In addition, Brooks competed in the triple jump (42-11.75) the long jump (20-04) and the 100-meter dash.

Maleek Pulliam placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 134-01. Pulliam earned a spot at the state meet by claiming a sixth place in region competition.

Another good showing for Bluestone was that of distance runner, Frank Csorba. He ran a time of 10:47.93, taking him just out of the top-ten.

Csorba leaves for Australia on June 24 to compete in two races sponsored by Down Under Sports.

Roger Dailey also qualified for the state meet during the regions in the high jump. Dailey participated in the prelims on Friday with a jump of 5-08 (12th) but the jump wasn’t enough to advance to the final rounds on Saturday.

Bluestone won their last four meets of the regular season.

Bluestone’s athletic director, Dan Powell said the student-athletes did well in representing Bluestone and Mecklenburg County at the state meet.

“Congratulations to all our participants in the VHSL State Track and Field Championship held Friday, June 2 and Saturday, June 3 at East Rockingham High School,” Powell said.

“Each participant represented Bluestone well. Their success this season is well deserved.”
