For Baron girls, nowhere but up

SoVaNow.com / December 04, 2019
The Bluestone varsity girls basketball team traveled to Victoria on Tuesday night to take on the Lady Chargers of Central Lunenburg in their James River District opener after going winless last season.

Coach April Bullock will be with the team the entire season this year and hopes are high for the Lady Barons to return to winning form. Bullock is a former Lady Baron and a member of Bluestone basketball’s 1,000-Point Club.

The varsity girls began last season starting mostly true freshman, which was a struggle for the basketball programs. Due to lack of participation from juniors and seniors, the jayvee season was cancelled in order to field a varsity squad.

Bullock was the head coach of the junior varsity. Coach Benjamin Sizemore was leading the varsity team. Sizemore left the varsity coaching position after the Christmas break last season and Bullock at that time was named acting head coach.

Though the team continued to lose under Bullock, the games got a lot more competitive. Before the Christmas break, losses of 40-plus points were not unusual. Bullock had the girls within striking distance to win several games against teams that had recorded 30-point wins against Bluestone just weeks prior.

The Lady Barons have taken part in two scrimmages to tune up for the 2019-2020 season. A home workout against Brunswick went well, followed by a scrimmage with Franklin last week.

Bullock has said that she is pleased with the effort the girls are displaying this year and has commended their hard work and dedication to practices. Having Bullock on board is driving interest in the basketball programs and has led to the fielding of a varsity and jayvee squad this season.
