Funderburk, Moser qualify for BASS state fishing competition / October 17, 2018

The Mecklenburg High School Anglers competed in their first competition this past Saturday and had two student-anglers qualify for state competition. Matthew Funderburk, a ninth grader at Bluestone High School and Chase Moser, a tenth grade student from Halifax County High School, placed third at the BASS Junior State Qualifier #1 held on the James River on Oct. 6.

The third place finish assures both anglers a spot in the BASS Junior State championship tournament in June. Seventy-four kids from grades 9-12 competed in the one-day event, with 37 boats and boat captains providing safe voyage and coaching tips to the student-anglers.

The local fishing club had six teams participating in the tournament. The MHSA also placed boat-fishing teams in 13th place, 19th, 23rd, and in 28th place.

Ryan Barksdale served as the boat captain for Team Funderburk and Moser. The club’s next tournament will be Nov. 4 on Buggs Island Lake where tournament bank fishing will also take place.
