Girls tennis 9-0 in first scrimmage

SoVaNow.com / March 11, 2009
The Halifax County High School Girl’s tennis team opened their season on Tuesday with a scrimmage against Randolph Henry High School. The Comets, playing with a very young squad, ended up with a 9-0 victory. It was a good outing for the Comets who have had to battle the elements to get practice time prior to their first real match experience.

Carlene Link and Megan Owen scored perfect 8-0 wins in the pro-set format playing at the number three and six singles spots. Jessica Palmer (1), Blair Jeffress, Kimmie Farmer, and Brandi Winstead all won singles matches without dropping more than two games.

The Comets also captured all three doubles events with big wins. Palmer and Jeffress won their number one matchup 8-0 and Link and Owen scored an 8-1 victory.

Kimmie Farmer was joined by Juana Domingez for an 8-4 victory at number three.

Coach Greg Donner, was pleased with the team’s performance and noted, “We have had almost no practice time to get ready for this outing and we are very young.” He added, “Jessica Palmer looked very strong at number one and Megan Owen was Impressive in her first outing in singles. Blair Jeffress also looked strong at the number two position.” He was particularly pleased that most team members were able to get in some action as there were several exhibition matches.

The Comets travel to Martinsville on Friday for the first regular season match.
