Golf makes regionals
SoVaNow.com / September 30, 2013
The Halifax County High School golf team is headed to Northwest Regional play.
The Comets captured top conference honors Thursday and will compete in regional Tuesday at the Forest Greens golf course in Prince William County.
HCHS took the conference title outright, with a team score of 317.
Albemarle finished second in the conference with a team score of 324. Orange had 328 and Patrick Henry-Ashland finished with a 330.
Peter Gasperini led Halifax with a round of 74. Joey Gasperini fired a 77 and Josh Irby had a 78. Matt Ratliff fired an 88.
In non-counted scores, Alex Tepper had an 89 and Chase Wilkerson had a 93.
Albemarle, as the runner-up team in the new conference format, also advanced to the regionals. The four-team conference tournament was played in Ashland, Virginia.
P. Gasperini was the medalist, while J. Gasperini tied for third and Irby was fifth. All three earned all-conference honors.
Comet golf coach David Graham said the top three players for HCHS sparked the regional effort, as they have all season. Halifax developed a plan for the regionals in a practice round on this course, and the Gasperinis and Irby executed that plan very well.
