GW ends girls soccer season / May 21, 2009
GW-Danville won a 4-3 shootout after a lengthy match and advanced in the Western Valley district girls’ varsity soccer tournament, eliminating HCHS Monday night.

The Comets’ season ended at 9-8 overall.

Sarah Rosche scored the Comets’ only goal at the 32:22 mark of the second half. Moments later, GW tied it at 1-1, even though the HCHS coaches insisted the Eagles were offsides on the play. But the goal stood, and the teams battled through two overtimes and a pair of sudden death periods before it was settled on the shootout.

Despite the loss to the Eagles, HCHS now has had about a half dozen seasons in a row with either a winning record or a .500 mark, and the Comets had another respectable season.

The Comets struggled at times with overall team intensity, according to head coach Sid Young. Nevertheless, the Comets got considerable improvement, especially from girls who had not started last year. Young also noted several players pulled up from the JVs last year also performed well.
