HC-South starts out 3-0 Cal Ripken state tourney

SoVaNow.com / July 07, 2014
The Halifax County South 12-year-old all-stars are 3-0 in Cal Ripken league state tournament play in Cremora.

HC-South was playing Sunday against the winner of Rockbridge-Glen Allen. With a win, HC-South would claim the state title. If HC-South lost, the local all-stars would play today at 5 p.m.

The goal is to reach the next level of Ripken all-star play, the SE Regionals. That event begins July 16 in Staunton.

HC-South started its state tournament run with a 7-1 win over Gloucester Friday.

Will Wallace worked the first three innings on the mound, with Brock Pool following on the hill. Drew Lester cranked a two-run homer in the first game. Wallace also provided offensive support.

HC South followed with a 9-2 win Saturday over defending state champion North East Augusta in its second tournament game.

Lester and Wallace both delivered home runs in that game. Lester worked five innings in that contest on the mound. Pool wrapped up the pitching effort.

HC-South downed Rockbridge late Saturday night, 5-2. Wallace delivered a strong pitching performance through five innings. Lester pitched in the sixth inning.

Lester supplied a key two-run double. Nathan Phillips also had an RBI sacrifice fly.
