HCHS girls track win Amherst Invitational

The Halifax County High School girls’ track team captured the Amherst Invitational last weekend, finishing first among a 23-team field.

Halifax emerged with the girls’ title, collecting 57 points. GW-Danville was second with 54, followed by Christiansburg with 50 and PH-Roanoke with 47.

Halifax finished 20th on the boys’ side, with eight points.

Several Comet athletes qualified to compete in the regional competition later this season.

The qualifiers included Travis Lipscomb, who jumped 45-4. He needed 45-5 to compete at the state meet. Davon Greene also jumped 21-8.25 in the long jump.

On the girls’ side, Andrea ‘Texas’ Wright turned in a 5-2 in the high jump and Tanisha Evans had an effort of 16’10.5 inches in the long jump. She also posted a time of 47.39 in the 300 hurdles.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Tiara Wolford, Tyiesha Pannell, Mikayla Boyd and Tanisha Evans ran a 47.39 to qualify for the regionals.

Evans won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.39, getting ten points.

Andrea Wright and Tanisha Evans finished first and third in the high jump.

Wright won with a leap of 5-04 and Evans hit the mark at 5-02.

The Comets had a second place and a seventh in the long jump, as Evans finished behind LCA’s Dana Mercer. Evans jumped 16-08.50 and Wright put up an effort of 15-06.

Mikayla Boyd placed third in the triple jump in 35-03.25. T. Evans was sixth in 34-07.50.

M. Boyd was 11th in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.01.

Evans placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.06.

The Comet top relay team took second in the 4x100, behind Heritage.

The Comet foursome ran a 49.92. That squad included Pannell, Tiara Woolford, Boyd and Tanhayla Chandler.

Pannell placed seventh in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.23. Halifax also got a fourth in the 200-meter dash in 27.37.

On the boys side, Greene finished sixth in the long jump, with an effort of 21-10.50.

Kendall Adams was eighth in 20-06.50.

T. Lipscomb was fourth in the triple jump in 42-04. Greene was eighth in this event in 42-05.00.

Trey Roberts posted a fifth place effort in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.13. Marcus Bowman was eighth in 16.31.

M. Bowman was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.99.
