HCHS releases winter sports schedules / December 17, 2020

Halifax County High School released its winter sports schedules Wednesday with varsity basketball leading the way. The boys are set to host Patrick County on Jan. 4, with the girls on the road.

Though this is only one step in getting athletics back on track at HCHS, it is a huge step. Athletics Director Allen Lawter said in releasing the schedules that changes could occur at any moment. The coronavirus pandemic continues to dictate how circumstances play out.

The Comet schedules are based on the Virginia High School League’s Championships + 1 calendar. The calendar allows for the first winter sports competition to begin Dec. 21.

Boys and girls basketball, swim and wrestling will be the first sports to open for the Comets. Season-2 Fall Sports and Season-3 Spring Sports will follow.

The Comets will be delaying their winter sports start until January.

Varsity basketball’s first games happen Jan. 4 versus Patrick County. The boys will host and the girls will be on the road.

Games are scheduled against Martinsville, GW, Bassett, Magna Vista, and Tunstall for the basketball programs. The regional tournament is scheduled to begin Feb. 9 with the region championship Feb. 12; VHSL state semifinals start Feb. 16 with the VHSL championship on Feb. 20.

With the condensed schedule in place — all sports can only play 60 percent of a regular season schedule — the shortened postseason eliminates the state quarterfinal round.

Comet wrestling begins competition on Jan. 5; the squad will host Magna Vista. The grapplers will wrestle again on Jan. 7 versus Bassett. After the Basset match the team will have five more competitions but currently no dates have been set.

Comet swim team takes to the pool on Jan. 7 hosting Basset at the South Boston/Halifax YMCA. The next three meets are held at the local Y with Basset again on Jan. 8 and Magna Vista on Jan. 11 and 12.

Swim holds the 4D Region Championship on Feb. 2. The VHSL Championship meet will take place Feb. 13.

Fans will have to wait to see the games in person. Lawter said for now, fans will not be allowed at the games, although they will be able to watch games via livestream video if available.

“We are not allowing spectators at this time,” Lawter said. “We will try to stream all home games.”

HCHS also released the Scholastic Bowl schedule. ACE teams begin competition on Jan. 13 with the season concluding Feb. 8.
