Irby, Day qualify for state golf open / October 19, 2017

Halifax County High School had two athletes involved in girls’ golf zone qualifying action Monday at Greens Folly, and Ashley Day has advanced to the state open next week.

Kassidy Irby had already qualified, due to her strong play earlier in regional action.

This is the VHSL girls state open Monday and Tuesday at Independence Golf course.

Day advanced after her play in the zone eight qualifier.

Day carded a 94.

One other Comet golfer, Jillian Waller, shot a 95 and did not qualify.

Comet coach David Graham said this will be Irby’s third straight year attending the prestigious state open. She is aiming for a top ten finish for her last season.

Irby finished tied for 17th in the boys’ state Class 5 tournament.

Graham added this is Day’s first trip to this level. The coach expects her to be somewhat nervous.
