Jayvee volleyball ends season with pair of wins

South Boston News

Halifax County High School jayvee volleyball finished its season beating Heritage Monday in a home match and then following up with a road win Tuesday at Patrick County.

Coach Thomas Barnes said the girls put in the work this season and it paid off. The Comets missed two weeks of play during the season due to COVID-19 safety protocols.

“Sunshine (Martin) and I couldn’t be any happier with the way these young girls responded this season; awesome job,” Barnes said. “As coaches, we believe it’s all about how you finish not how you start.”

He said the Comets had to battle back to get the win over Patrick County. They dropped the first set 17-25 (PC) and followed up winning 25-15 and 18-16.

“I’m so proud of the way our girls played,” Barnes said. “We dropped the first set, but responded well and won the next two. They really got after it in the last two sets. Girls were flying all over the court making plays. Our service game was also very consistent and we bumped, set and hit well when we had the opportunity.”

JV vs. PC: Abby Duffer 8D, 5K; Olivia Seamster 2D, 1K,1SA; Makayla Powell 7SA, 7D, 1K, 1SA; Blakely Martin 2AS, 11D, 1K, 1B, 2SA; Erin Satterfield 1D, 3K, 1B; Peyton Irby 1K, 1B, 2D, 1AS, 1 SA; Hannah Terry 8D,1AS; Jacie Snead 6D, 2SA; Alexis Ayers 1D.

Scores in this win were 25-8 (HC), 24-26 (PC), and 15-7 (HC). Makayla Powell and Blakely Martin combined for 13 assists. Abby Duffer had 26 digs.

“Heritage pushed us to three sets tonight, but we were able to pull out the win,” Barnes said. “Set two we uncharacteristically missed several serves and also lost some of our energy. Sets one and three, the girls played as they have been throughout the winning streak.”
