Deaundra “Dee Dee” Jeffress and Thomas Lee were honored as Female and Male Athletes of the Year at Halifax County High School Thursday morning.

Both students were not only productive in their respective sports but also successful in the classroom.

A four-year starter with the Comet girls varsity basketball team, Jeffress was an All-Region and All-District performer her entire high school career. She achieved many of her goals on and off the court — including helping HCHS return to double-digit wins after a long slump, putting the team in contention for a state title berth, and eclipsing the 1,000-point scoring mark in her senior season.

An honors student, Jeffress said she was thrilled to receive the Best All-Around Female Athlete award.

“I was so surprised and overwhelmed when they presented me with the award,” Jeffress said. “It is a honor to receive this reward being that I worked so hard to be a great athlete and an even greater student. Thanks to all my family and friends that congratulated and supported me.”

Jeffress’ basketball coach, David Graham, said the recognition was well earned and deserved. He noted it was an honor to coach Jeffress.

“I am very proud of Dee Dee receiving this award,” Graham said. “Her work habits on and off the court are fantastic.

“She is a role model to any young person who desires to become a student-athlete. Her accomplishments are outstanding in all the sports she played at Halifax. It was a pleasure to work with her each day of the season and Coach Edmunds and I wish her all success in life.”

Jeffress will be attending Radford University in the fall and majoring in sports medicine. A Scottsburg resident, Jeffress is the daughter of Rufus, Sr. and Angie Jeffress.

Lee was selected as the Male Athlete of the Year after compiling a solid high school sports career in track and football.

Lee will be attending Bluefield College in the fall with scholarships in academics, football and track. The senior also led the Comet football team as quarterback in a successful 2019 campaign.

The son of Thomas Lee Sr. and Charlene Lee, the Alton youth was a VHSL region and state champion in track and field, winning in the shot put event and the long jump.

In accepting the award, Lee said he was sincerely thankful. “It’s a blessing and I worked so hard during all my sports.”

Lee’s track coach, Mary Douglas, said Lee is exceptional and has many positive qualities he will bring to college and his future in general.

“Thomas is a great kid, student and athlete,” Douglas said. “He is a hard worker and the kind of person who will work hard to be successful and will also reach out to help others.

“He is what I consider to be a ‘Quiet Storm.’ I say that because he never bragged about what he could or would do in competition, he would just go out and compete!

“Sometimes other athletes would ask him questions about technique or compliment him on a performance and he would give them a smile and help where he could. I think we are going to hear great things in the future concerning Thomas’s athleticism. I am very proud of him.”
