The Halifax County High School girls varsity basketball team enjoyed a solid season, advancing to the Region 4D basketball tournament where they fell at home in overtime to Salem in opening round action.

Two Comets have earned regional honors for their play this season. Senior Dee Dee Jeffress has been named to the Region 4D first team. Ella Morrison, a sophomore, was named to the second team.

The selection was quite an accomplishment for Jeffress who was named to the team for the fourth time in a row — her first selection coming as a freshman.

Jeffress has had an outstanding high school career, helping lead the Comet girls to the Region 5D South Sub-Region Tournament in her junior season. The Comets fell to Albemarle High School of Charlottesville 39-32.

Jeffress’ offensive skills produced scoring of over 1,000 points in her high school career. She surpassed the mark in December during the Halifax Holiday Basketball Classic in the team’s win over Gretna during opening round play.

Morrison was selected to the VHSL Region 4D second team and it was a well-deserved recognition for the young player. The sophomore is developing into a good defensive player and can bring the heat on offense — Morrison posted 30 points in the Salem loss before fouling out of the game in overtime with less than a minute remaining in the frame.
