Jeffress records fifth save of the season

SoVaNow.com / September 07, 2020

Former Comet Jeremy Jeffress added his fifth save of the season in Friday’s Chicago Cubs 4-1 win over St. Louis. Jeffress reported to the mound in the ninth inning to close the game.

Chicago leads the NL Central with a 23-17 record.

After striking out Dylan Carlson, Jeffress went on to walk the next batter. On the next at-bat Jeffress had Tommy Edman hit into a double play to end the game and earn the save.

The five saves have come over six-save opportunities. Jeffress improved his season record to 3-1, with 1.13 ERA over 14 games and 16 innings pitched. Jeffress has a 0.81 WHIP and has struck out 11.

Chicago is in a five-game series with St. Louis, who are in second place in the NL central, two and a half games back at 16-15; the series is scheduled to wrap up tomorrow. Jeffress former team, the Milwaukee Brewers, are currently in third, four games out at 18-20.

Jeffress continues to make his case for the Cubs as their chosen closer for the season. Since returning to play - in a shortened season because of COVID-19 – Jeffress has been battling with teammates Rowan Wick and Craig Kimbrel as the teams’ closer.

Kimbrel has struggled this season on comparison with his 2019 season with the Cubs. Wick has four saves over four opportunities and has five holds on the season – his latest hold coming in the eighth inning of Friday night’s win.
