JV volleyball ends season in fourth place / October 30, 2019

The Bluestone jayvee volleyball team went 2-1 in their final week of regular season action, good enough for fourth place in the James River District.

Bluestone finished 12-6, 10-6 JRD,

Bluestone was never ranked below No. 6 in the district and in recent weeks battled hard for the No. 2 and No. 3 rankings. Goochland ended the season in first place (15-3, 14-2). Bluestone handed Goochland one of its two losses in the district and was the only team to best Goochland on their home court.

Buckingham County (15-3, 13-3), and Central Lunenburg (15-4, 12-4) finished the season No. 2 and No. 3, in that order. Randolph-Henry finished 9-10, 8-8 to take fifth.

Nottoway, Amelia and Cumberland all completed their seasons with district records of 4-12 but due to overall records finished sixth through eighth, respectively. Prince Edward closed out at 3-13 in the JRD to take ninth place.

Bluestone faced Cumberland at home on Monday, winning 2-0. The jayvees also got a 2-0 win at Nottoway on Tuesday. The team put up a great fight against Goochland in Skipwith on Thursday but came up just short in the 2-1 match.

Facing Goochland, Bluestone jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. Goochland worked to find their game, but the Lady Barons were on fire and soon had the score at 13-5.

After this point Goochland made its own run and tied the set at 15-15. The teams locked up again at 20-20. From here Bluestone went on to finish for the 25-22 win.

Set two was close in the early going with the teams battling to an 8-8 tie. Goochland would find their stroke after this and move out to the 8-18 lead.

Bluestone attempted to fight back but the damage was done. Goochland took the set at 15-25 to set up a tiebreaker. This game provided some real entertainment with the teams knotted constantly from points three to seven. Goochland eventually pulled away to take the match with a score of 10-15.

Grace Newcomb paced Bluestone with five serve aces, nine digs, 11 assists, and two kills. Cassidy Newcomb had seven kills, nine digs and one serve ace. Kailey Gill contributed seven assists; Amelia Whittington added 19 digs.

Bluestone upends Nottoway and Cumberland to finish season

The Junior Lady Barons made quick work of district foes Nottoway and Cumberland last week, taking each with the 2-0 final.

Skyla King led the team in serve aces versus Nottoway with four. King also posted 13 digs and a kill.

C. Newcomb had nine kills in the match; Lillie Puryear recorded three serve aces, nine digs, one assist, and four kills. G. Newcomb continued her consistency with two aces, four digs, 11 assists, and three kills; Kailey Gill dished out nine assists.

Scores in the Nottoway win were 25-15 and 25-11.

Monday’s night match against Cumberland saw the entire squad getting in on the action. Bluestone used set scores of 25-17 and 25-22 to take the win.

The team had 12 serve aces, 15 assists, and 16 kills. Tania Harris had a block in the match.
