King of the County game kicks-off football season
SoVaNow.com / July 16, 2014The Virginia High School League released its 2015 football schedule last week - Longtime cross-county rivals Park View and Bluestone will meet in the first game of the season for bragging rights and possession of the King of the County trophy.
Park View won the King of the County trophy last year, coming from behind.
Both team’s season schedules are mainly with schools in their classifications. Bluestone is a Class A2 school, while PV is Class 3A.
The win alone could not only be significant for Bluestone in regaining the trophy and bragging rights, but could also help the team’s efforts in acquiring a better seed in conference play.
Points systems are just as important in high school sports as any other level of sports today. A Bluestone win helps in the points because a 2A would knock of a 3A school that produces a very solid football program. Seventy percent of Bluestone’s schedule is against 2A schools and 20 percent against 1A schools. Therefore, the Park View game has real significance for the Barons.
Park View has two 3A schools on its schedule, Colonial Heights and South Hampton. Those games will be important to the Dragons because 50 percent of their schedule is against 2A schools and 30 percent versus 1A schools.
One might think that playing lower-ranked schools is the answer to a winning season. But that is not always the case, as Park View athletics director Julia McInturf pointed out in a questionnaire-study taken by the VHSL regarding its purpose district, conference, and region changes beginning in 2015.
Park View losing to 2A and 1A challengers would impact the team negatively, especially in power points and playoff seeding.
