Lady Barons qualify for region tourney, open play at Chatham

SoVaNow.com / February 20, 2013
The Bluestone varsity girls basketball team earned a fifth seed in the Region B Division 2 postseason tournament this week after wrapping up play in the James River District tournament.

The Lady Barons were set to play Tuesday at Chatham High School in the first round of the Group A western region playoffs. Bluestone’s opponent, the Lady Cavaliers of Chatham, entered regional tourney action seeded fourth after finishing second in the Dogwood District.

The third place team in the James River District during the regular season, Bluestone catapulted ahead of second place Goochland by beating the Lady Bulldogs 60-57 in the JRD tournament semifinals on Thursday night. The Bluestone girls went on to play in the title game, losing to eventual JRD champs Amelia.

By virtue of the semifinals loss to Bluestone, Goochland was relegated to the sixth seed in the Region B Division 2 tournament, drawing a first-round matchup last night with #3 seed Clarke County.

In their district tournament game Thursday, Bluestone and Goochland reversed roles — with the third-ranked Lady Barons springing a 60-57 upset of the host Lady Bulldogs, runners-up in the JRD during the regular season.

Bre Roberts sealed the win for Bluestone in the closing seconds by sinking two free throws with Goochland clinging to a thin lead, 57-56. Roberts had dribbled downcourt to try to score for Bluestone but instead drew the foul, putting her at the line where she nailed both foul shots to give Bluestone a 58-57 lead. In the frantic final moments Goochland was forced to send Bluestone back to the foul line, and the girls converted both tries to make the final score 60-57.

It capped off a hard-fought game in which Bluestone largely succeeded in knocking the Lady Bulldogs off their stride. On offense, the Lady Barons got a huge boost from Keishana Tucker with 18 points, while Alexis Walton added 14 and Roberts had 12.

Carmen Sturdifen added eight and Essence Pulliam had six in the winning effort.

Prior to beating Goochland in the semifinals, Bluestone knocked off Randolph-Henry 64-16 in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.

In that game, Alexis Walton led the Bluestone offense with 15 points, followed by Sturdifen with 10 and Roberts with nine. KaNiesha Bass added eight points and Stephanie Walker had seven.
