Lady Barons take district opener against Nottoway
SoVaNow.com / December 12, 2012The Bluestone varsity girls split a pair of games last week, losing to non-district foe Greensville by a 54-45 tally, but defeating Nottoway 61-53 in their season debut in the James River District.
The Lady Barons hosted the Nottoway girls Friday night in Skipwith and jumped out to a 22-13 lead in the first quarter, setting the tone the rest of the way.
Bluestone led at halftime, 33-26, and extended the lead in the third quarter by outpointing the Lady Cougars by four points in the frame. At the start of the fourth quarter, Bluestone led 47-36.
Nottoway tried to rally in the fourth quarter and they chipped away at the Lady Barons’ advantage, but the varsity girls were able to come away with the 61-53 victory.
With the win, the varsity girls improved to 3-1 on the season as they prepared to resume action last night against district foe Goochland.
On Wednesday of last week, the Bluestone girls suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Lady Eagles of Greensville, 54-45. It was the second game of the season between the two teams, with Bluestone winning the first matchup on Nov. 28, 53-43.
This time the Greensville girls were playing at home, and after an ugly first half — the opening period ended with Greensville ahead, 7-4, and the halftime score was only 19-15 — the host Eagles got on track.
Greensville scored 39 points in the second half to pull away from the Lady Barons, who managed 26 points after the break.
The Lady Barons got a big game from Carmen Sturdifen with 17 points while Stephanie Walker added nine, with all but two of her points coming in the second half.
Bre Roberts added seven and Tiffany Davis chipped in six.
