The Halifax County High School varsity girls soccer team won on its opening night in the Piedmont District tournament.

Halifax sailed by GW-Danville, 5-1, at home.

Halifax was set to meet Bassett at the Smith River Complex in Henry County.

Coach Sid Young took an upbeat view of the progress of the girls.

“They’re playing better. They’ve improved a lot,” said Young.

Madelyn Haskett scored once, and Mandy Lewis had two goals. Jessica Watts and Izzie Rosche had one goal apiece in the win over the Eagles.

Young said the Comet defenders - Erin Glass, Georgia Daniels, Cari Cole and Leigh-Anne McCormick - all played very well.

Halifax is 8-7. The Piedmont results have no bearing on the upcoming regional seeding.

Halifax is showing better overall team unity in the postseason.
