The Park View volleyball team completed its sweep of the Tri-Rivers District on Monday with a district tournament title. The Lady Dragons were undefeated en route to taking the regular season crown and then downed Windsor and Southampton to claim the district tournament.

On Tuesday, Oct. 29 the Lady Dukes of Windsor came to Park View for the opening round of the TRD tournament. The Lady Dragons defeated the Lady Dukes 3-1. Park View won game one, 25-6, game two, 25-7, and game four, 25-6. The Lady Dukes were able to best Park View with a rare game win in game three, 25-23.

Leading the Lady Dragons were Courtlyn Hawkins with 15 kills and 3 blocks, Cambra Graham with 5 kills, Deaona Watkins with 5 kills, Kaylee Coker with 3 kills and Krislyn Johnson with 3 kills and 2 blocks.

In a match originally scheduled for Oct. 31 but postponed to Monday due to Halloween night tornado warnings in Mecklenburg County, the Lady Dragons defeated the Lady Indians of Southampton again by a 3-1 margin.

The Park View girls possess a lot of talent but the Lady Indians brought a lot of heart and desire to PVHS Monday night and certainly didn’t make it easy for the host team. All four games were hotly contested and the Lady Dragons were forced out of their comfort zone to get the win.

Game one went to the Dragon girls, who led from the get-go, going ahead by as many as nine points before the Lady Indians drew to within four before falling 25-18.

Game two was similar as the Lady Dragons took an early lead, but the Lady Indians fought back and the teams swapped the lead several times before PV put the hammer down and vaulted in front 20-11. The Lady Indians didn’t quit and cut the lead back to 21-15, but they couldn’t stop Park View and fell 25-16.

Southampton reversed the playbook in game three. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Indians jumped out to a 10-5 lead. Park View fought back and thanks to a couple service aces by Deaona Watkins were back in it, trailing 11-9. The Lady Indians gathered themselves and went ahead, 24-17, looking to close it out. Park View garnered a couple more points but ultimately fell 25-19.

In game four, after a stern discussion with the coaching staff, the Lady Dragons took the lead and kept it until the determined Lady Indians caught up to them and tied it at 11-all. The battle continued and the teams were tied again at 14 but then the Lady Dragons opened up a 20-14 lead on a service ace by junior Courtlyn Hawkins. Park View was able to maintain a comfortable margin and won game four, 25-19 to take the match.

With the win, the Lady Dragons captured both the regular season and tournament championships. In addition, several members of the team received all-district honors (see accompanying story). The Dragon girls also move forward into region playoff action. The playoffs will start tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 6 with Park View hosting the winner of the Colonial Heights-Lafayette contest held Monday evening.

The top two finishers in the regional tournament will earn a trip to the VHSL State Championships to be held later.

Courtlyn Hawkins 18 kills, 3 blocks, 5 aces, Kaylee Coker 5 kills 2 blocks, Deaona Watkins 4 kills, Cambra Graham 3 kills, Carson Wall 3 kills.
