The Park View Lady Dragons got a key district victory on the road last week, traveling to Emporia and defeating the Lady Eagles on their home court, 56-48. The Park View girls then came home for another Tri-Rivers District match-up and were defeated by the Surry County Lady Cougars, 63-46.

On Saturday, the Lady Dragons competed in the Brunswick Classic Invitational in Lawrenceville and were soundly beaten by the 5A Meadowbrook Lady Monarchs, 60-33.

Surry County 63, Park View 46

The Lady Dragons just couldn’t get any traction against the Surry girls on Friday night. Despite four PV players scoring in double figures, Surry won three of the four periods to win the game handily.

The Lady Cougars took the first period, 15-9, and followed in the second quarter with a 12-10 run to lead at halftime by eight, 27-19. Park View cut into that lead in the third period by winning the frame 15-12, to trail by just five points, 39-34 going into the fourth period.

But the Lady Cougars put the hammer down in the final stanza to pull away for the win. Surry doubled up Park View in the fourth, 24-12, for the 17-point win.

Brunswick Classic Invitational

Meadowbrook 60, Park View 33

The Lady Dragons traveled to Lawrenceville on Saturday to participate in the Brunswick Classic and faced a tough opponent in the Lady Monarchs of 5A Meadowbrook High School.

Meadowbrook, hailing from the VHSL Central District, came into the tilt looking vulnerable with a 5-5 record. But the ladies from Chesterfield proved to be more that the Lady Dragons could handle.

Park View struggled offensively and couldn’t establish a rhythm. As a result, the Lady Monarchs outscored the Dragons 13-8 in the opening period and 17-4 in the second, taking a 30-12 lead to the locker room for the half.

Although the Lady Dragons showed some signs of life in the third period, Meadowbrook still won the frame 15-11 to extend the lead to 45-23 entering the final period.

With the game basically out of hand, Dragons head coach Mike Barmoy took the opportunity to get some playing time for his younger players in the final frame. They acquitted themselves well enough but the Monarchs managed to win the fourth period, 15-10, to take the lopsided victory.

Park View box scores: A. Williams 8, S. Jansen 5, D. Watkins 4, K. Johnson 4, S. Garnes 3, S. Chavis 3, T. Watts 2, T. House 2, A. Green 2

Coming up this week

With the week’s action, the Lady Dragons fell to 12-4 overall and 9-2 in the Tri-Rivers District. Next up the Lady Dragons will host the Bluestone Lady Barons this Thursday, Jan. 23 followed by ARGS at PVHS on Friday.
