Lady Dragons topple ARGS, lose twice on road last week

SoVaNow.com / December 18, 2019
The Park View varsity girls basketball team was busy last week with three straight road trips and then a rare Saturday game that tested the endurance of players and coaching staff alike.

On Monday, Dec. 9 the Lady Dragons traveled to Surry to face the powerful Lady Cougars and fell by a final score of 48-28. On the next night, Tuesday, Park View traveled to Lancaster on Virginia’s Northern Neck to face off against the Lady Devils of Lancaster High, winning by a 56-36 score.

After a couple of rest days, the Lady Dragons were back on the road to Petersburg for a contest with Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (ARGS) and got another win, 50-8. The Lancaster Lady Devils then came to South Hill to complete the home-and-away series and Park View was once again victorious, 64-49.

Against Lancaster on Tuesday, the Lady Dragons were paced by sophomore Deaona Watkins who had an amazing performance — pouring in 19 points in what may be a career best.

Asia Green also made it into double digits with 12 points, followed by Azaria Williams with nine, Tyonne Montague with eight, Mikya Harrison with four, Tiara House with three and Teonia Watts with one point.

The Lady Dragons traveled to Petersburg on Friday the 13th and it proved to be an unlucky night for the young ARGS squad. Eleven players on the PV roster spread out the scoring as they tallied 50 points while limiting ARGS to just eight. PV won all four periods handily and held ARGS scoreless in the opening frame.

For the Lady Dragons, Krislyn Johnson led the way with 11 points, Sophia Jansen scored 5, Azaria Williams 5, Asia Green 1, Mikya Harrison 4, Deaona Watkins 5, Teonia Watts 3, Nyjae Talley 2, Tyonne Montague 8, Jordan Jackson 2 and India Green 4.

As the week ended the Lady Dragons stood at 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Tri Rivers District. The Lady Dragons were set to host the Lady Colonials of Colonial Heights on Monday, Dec. 16, followed by the Brunswick Lady Bulldogs visiting today (Wednesday), Dec. 18.

On Friday the Lady Dragons will travel to Skipwith for the Queen of the County game against the Lady Barons of Bluestone. Game time should be 5:30 p.m. but call the school for confirmation if you plan to attend.
