Lion girls lose by two as Patrick rallies late

The HCMS girls dropped their basketball season opener in a close game with Patrick County Middle School, falling 36-34.

The Lion girls were ahead 29-23 at the end of the third quarter but Patrick County stormed back in the fourth, outscoring HCMS 13-5 to squeeze out the victory to begin the season.

Before HCMS opened a lead in the third quarter, the game was back-and-forth with Halifax taking the first quarter 14-11 and Patrick cutting that lead to a point, 19-18, at halftime.

Five players got on the scoreboard for HCMS, led by Hanna Sutphin with 13 points. Malaysha Claiborne added eight, Olivia Seamster had seven and Cha’Rianna Harris and Paige Powell contributed four and two points, in that order.
