Lion girls open season with wins over Powhatan, Diamond Fever

SoVaNow.com / March 23, 2009
The HCMS softball team swept to a tournament championship Saturday, winning its own season-opening event with three wins.

HCMS downed Powhatan, 12-6, Diamond Fever out of Danville, 15-4 and then Powhatan in the championship finale, 4-3.

Recapping the tournament: HCMS got a strong pitching effort from Meg Bane in the title game, as she fanned five and walked six. Halifax really didn’t establish decisive momentum until the late innings, scoring twice in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh.

Tayler Mosley and Brianna Pierce scored in the sixth, as HCMS was bolstered by solid hitting. Mosley, Kendall Lloyd and Megan Strange singled in the inning and Pierce doubled.

HCMS added two more runs in the seventh, as Kelsey Williams and Mosley hit key singles.

HCMS also rolled to a lopsided win over Diamond Fever. Courtney Epps got the win, as she fanned one and walked three. Miyana Ross finished up in relief.

Pierce reached on an error, doubled and singled and scored three times. Meg Bane walked, doubled and singled and three times.

Earlier, the softball team doubled up Powhatan, 12-6.

Meg Bane got the win, with six innings of quality mound work. Bane fanned seven and walked five.

Bane led the hit parade with four RBI, while Cori Campbell had three and Kendall Lloyd two.
