Lions down Bluestone in Wednesday golf match / August 19, 2019
Halifax County Middle School golf sailed by Bluestone, 171-194, Wednesday.

J.D. Cunningham led the Lions with a 38, good for medalist honors in the match. C.J. Degraw shot a round of 40, followed by Grady Upchurch with 46. Jack Morgan had a 47.

Alex Payne, 49; Neyland Wallace, 51; Aaron Crutchfield, 52; Peyton Murray, 54; Emiliee Elliott, 55; Landon Jones, 58.

Coach Charlie Payne is upbeat about Lion golf.

“Great start to the season. One of the best team scores Halifax had posted. The team was led by medalist J D Cunningham with a fine round of 38. Another fine round was posted by C J DeGraw with a 40. The team had five scores under 50 and that is what we are looking for.

“Four scores under 50 gives the team a good chance to win. We have one of the most talented teams this year. Most of these kids have played a lot this summer in the Junior Piedmont League and have gained some good experience. Coach (David) Graham and I’s main goal this year is to focus more on the team’s short game in practice. We saw a lot of improvement on that part yesterday and will continue to work on it in throughout the year. The players are working hard in practice and keeping a positive attitude in making changes to their game. Very proud of their behavior and sportsmanship in the match,” said Payne.
