Lions finish second behind Ben Franklin

SoVaNow.com / August 22, 2019
Ben Franklin Middle School carded a team score of 172 Monday, barely edging the Halifax County Middle School golf team, which fired a 175.

Patrick County had a 183 and Martinsville did not have a team score.

Halifax’s J.D. Cunningham again led the Lions with a 40. Alex Payne had a 42 and Jack Morgan recorded a 45. Peyton Murray shot a round of 48. C.J. DeGraw had a 49 and Grady Upchurch had a 51.

Lion coach Charles Payne described this as “an awesome match with Halifax and (Ben Franklin) battling back and forth until the end, with BFMS coming out on top by three (strokes).

“We got off to a slow start having a few bad holes early, but was so proud at the way we finished. Our last three to four holes were awesome. Our players knew we were a little behind and turned it on with a solid effort.

“(Franklin) is always a tough team and our kids fought to the end. We hit some really good shots today but were not sharp around the greens. I believe our kids understand the important of a good short game now, and our practices will be more productive. Our goal is to have at least four kids under 50 this year for each match and we are doing that. Our second goal is improvement around the greens and we will continue to work on this,” said Payne.
